The role of healthcare in reducing inequalities and poverty in the EU

A new European Commission report highlights that public healthcare systems significantly reduce poverty and income inequality across the EU. The study finds that healthcare coverage can lower inequality by up to 4.5 Gini points and reduce poverty by up to 8 percentage points. These in-kind benefits are particularly important for people with disabilities, chronic conditions, and low-income households. The report also provides Member States with a practical toolkit to assess the distributional impact of healthcare reforms and design policies that strengthen equity and social cohesion.
