Screen Time and Social Inequalities Among Children in France

This study presents national data on screen use among children aged 3–11 in France and highlights clear social inequalities. Screen time increases with age and is almost twice as high on days off as on school days. Children from families with lower educational levels consistently spend more time on screens from the earliest ages, while no differences appear between rural and urban areas.

Television remains the most used screen, though older children increasingly use video game consoles and smartphones. Boys use consoles more often, while girls—especially from age nine—use smartphones and access social networks more frequently. By age 11, nearly half of children have their own smartphones.

Most parents report limiting screen time, but far fewer monitor the content their children view.
