Screen recommendations reduce children’s time on computers and mobile phones
New statistics from the Swedish Media Authority’s Ungar & medier 2025 report show a decline in screen use among children aged 9–12. The decrease is attributed in part to the Swedish Public Health Agency’s strengthened screen time recommendations, which have guided families and schools toward healthier media habits.
The Swedish Media Authority released reports indicating a downward trend in digital media use among younger children, along with growing parental concern about social media and gaming. According to the Authority, both the national debate on digital exposure and the Public Health Agency’s guidance have played an important role in shifting attitudes and behaviours.
The Public Health Agency highlights that its recommendations have helped reduce harmful or excessive screen use, while promoting positive and enriching digital engagement. In October, the Agency will publish new support materials for parents, children, and professionals who work with young people. These resources will provide further information and practical strategies for maintaining safe, balanced screen habits. The recommendations focus on reducing risks such as exposure to harmful content, unwanted contact, and screen use that interferes with sleep, schoolwork or physical activity.
