Reducing tobacco and nicotine-based products consumption

The European Union aims to achieve a tobacco-free generation by 2040, in line with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Protecting people from second-hand smoke and aerosols is a key part of this effort, supported by an EU Council Recommendation, but further action at all levels of governance is needed to make meaningful progress.

EuroHealthNet outlined key recommendations and examples of inspiring practices based on insights from its 2024 Country Exchange Visit in Budapest. The event brought together public health experts from across Europe to share strategies and solutions for reducing tobacco and nicotine consumption.

EuroHealthNet’s brief highlights policy approaches and practical examples to guide national, regional and local governments, as well as EU-level initiatives, in promoting healthier, smoke-free communities.
