Mental wellbeing mostly good but uneven among older Swedes

A survey by the Public Health Agency of Sweden finds that 80–90% of people aged 65+ report good mental wellbeing. However, vulnerable groups—women, the foreign-born, and those with illness or financial difficulties—experience higher anxiety and distress. Needs for wellbeing, such as social connections, meaningful activities, and participation in society, are similar to those of other age groups.

The report emphasises older people’s own perspectives and can guide policymakers, professionals, and society in promoting mental health, reducing inequalities, and challenging ageism.
