Healthy ageing
Europe’s population is ageing at a rapidly increasing rate, bringing growing demands for long-term care. While longer lives reflect major public health progress, this EuroHealthNet policy brief shows that the rising need for care is driven not by ageing itself but by ageing in poor health.
Differences in older people’s health outcomes often reflect inequalities experienced throughout life, including in education, income, working conditions and living environments. Those who face disadvantages are more likely to experience poor health as they age, making lifelong equity a key factor in healthy ageing.
Healthy ageing interventions can help maintain independence and wellbeing, and support older people’s participation in both economic and social life. Access to affordable, good-quality long-term care, particularly home and community-based services, is essential. Lessons from successful national, regional and local initiatives show how targeted action can improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities in later life.
