Effect of ultra-processed food consumption on male reproductive and metabolic health
This study investigates the impact of ultra-processed food (UPF) intake on metabolic health, reproductive hormones, and semen quality in healthy young men. Using a randomized crossover dietary intervention, the researchers compared ultra-processed versus unprocessed diets under both adequate and excess caloric intake conditions. Outcomes included body composition, lipid profile, appetite hormones, reproductive hormones, semen quality, and pollutant exposure. The study highlights that UPF consumption adversely affects fat mass, LDL:HDL ratio, reproductive hormones, sperm motility, and alters pollutant profiles, even independent of calorie intake.
