Meal cards for schoolchildren Riga – Milan Pact Awards 2020

This video summarises an initiative by the Riga City Municipality for children from vulnerable families, including schoolchildren, to purchase food during the COVID-19 pandemic. Riga was one of 116 cities whose representatives signed the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) – an agreement with a commitment to develop food policies and sustainable food systems that are inclusive, flexible, secure and diverse, provide healthy and food for all, reduce waste and conserve biodiversity, while adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.

One of the MUFPP’s activities is to promote the exchange of experiences between cities in the development and implementation of sustainable food policy, which is why the Milan Pact Awards are held every year to nominate and reward good practice. This year, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual competition was replaced by a special online event, the Milan Pact Talks, inviting cities to submit short videos to share examples of good practice in the urban food chain.
