Burdensome childhood experiences and consequences in adulthood

The Slovenian National Institute of Public Health (Slovenian: Nacionalnega inštituta za javno zdravje; NIJZ), together with the University of Ljubljana, has conducted a survey on stressful childhood experiences and their relationship to health and wellbeing in adulthood. The study found that participants who experienced four or more stressful events in childhood were more likely to have physical problems and illnesses such as heart disease, respiratory disease, thyroid problems, migraines, as well as mental problems. They were also at higher risk of various forms of addiction, smoking, higher alcohol consumption and psychosomatic problems.
